Situated about 11 km from Shimla and perched at an altitude of 7,200 feet, Tara Devi Temple is one of the region’s most sacred and scenic spiritual sites. Dedicated to Goddess Tara, a powerful form of Shakti, the temple dates back over 250 years and was built by the rulers of the Sen Dynasty of the former Keonthal Estate.
According to legend, a Sen king had a divine vision of Goddess Tara instructing him to install her idol on this serene hilltop. The original idol was brought from Bengal, where Goddess Tara is worshipped in Tantric traditions. Initially a wooden shrine, the temple was later reconstructed using traditional Himachali architecture, featuring carved wooden pillars, sloped roofs, and intricate detailing.
The temple is surrounded by dense deodar and oak forests, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas. It is not only a place of worship but also a destination for peace, reflection, and natural beauty. Thousands visit during festivals like Navratri, seeking blessings and spiritual solace.
Tara Devi Temple beautifully blends mythology, heritage, and nature, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Shimla or seeking a spiritual escape in the hills.
