The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), popularly known as Advanced Study, is one of Shimla’s most iconic landmarks — where history, architecture, and intellect come together. Situated on the picturesque Observatory Hill, this magnificent structure was originally built in 1888 as the Viceregal Lodge, the summer residence of the British Viceroys in India.
Designed in the grand Jacobethan style, the building is a masterpiece of colonial architecture, featuring grey stone walls, wooden interiors, and sprawling lawns. It was in this very building that several significant discussions were held leading up to India’s independence and partition in 1947.
After independence, the estate was handed over to the Government of India and converted into an institute for higher learning in 1965, thanks to the vision of President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. Today, IIAS is a renowned center for advanced research in humanities and social sciences, hosting scholars from across India and the world.
Open to visitors, the institute offers guided tours that reveal its historical legacy, stunning interiors, and panoramic views of Shimla. A visit to Advanced Study is not just a walk through history, but also an experience of peace, learning, and inspiration.
